Need of the hour for Aviation Industry: A Comprehensive Policy

As India is moving towards becoming the world’s third biggest aviation market, airline association believes that a comprehensive policy for the aviation segment should be formulated. Tony Tyler, Director General and CEO of IATA remarked that aviation and aviation related tourism has carved a place for seven million Indian jobs and USD 23 bn of India’s GDP. There is a tremendous possibility of growth. However, the challenges have to be overcome.

There are certain airlines that have been able to pull profits out of the business and on the other side sector-wide losses in India are still expected to cross USD1 bn, this year. Despite of the fact of that flight Reservations in Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Chennai and other business cities are still on the high-demand side.

So what’s holding us back? Possibly, the reason could be the arduous regulatory framework, processes, debilitating taxes, and expensive infrastructure.

On the occasion of Aviation Day India, which was organized by IATA, India’s Ministry of Civil Aviation and Confederation of Indian Industry, Tyler indicated three areas critical of the aviation sector, and they need to be improved. The areas are:

• Taxation
•  Fuel Pricing
• Permission to be granted to the Airports Economic Regulatory Authority for working independently

Though the regulations are backed by good intentions, they are pulling the growth-meter downwards as they are not aligned well with the global standards. This is further hampering the sales of International Tour Packages from India in addition to causing hindrance to the scope of airlines business. 

Current legal constraints are preventing AERA’s recommendation of 78% reduction in airport charges in Delhi. For optimizing growth of the aviation sector in India, IATA has proposed privatization of airports in Ahmedabad, Kolkata, Jaipur and Chennai.

India’s Feat Is Likely To Shoot Up By 7.5%

According to a report by the World Travel and Tourism Council, the Indian Travel and Tourism is forecasted to see a growth of 7.5% in 2015, owing to the new visa reforms. This spurt is exceeding the growth predicted for the South Asian region, by 0.6%.

This clearly indicates that the industry which contributed 7.64 trillion rupees and 36.7 million jobs to the Indian economy is likely to keep the Tour Operators in Delhi NCR busy. It is expected that there will be steep flight of 8.22 trillion rupees of India’s GDP and approximately 37.4 million jobs. The report states that India has a good potential to benefit from visa reforms, in addition to the infrastructure improvements under new government.

Well, this again makes the situation vivid and hopeful that investment in the sector will rise by 9.3% by the end of this year. Wow, a good deal of increment!

Global travel search site Skyscanner released a series of travel trends, which show that Indians are keen to escape from the scorching heat and are turning to overseas travel this summer season.

While international destinations have seen a whopping 101 percent growth in volume searches, findings for domestic destinations have seen a rise of 60 percent over January to April 2014 compared to the same period last year, said a statement.

Now days, Indians have become more experimental when it comes to traveling. In the spirit of exploration, they are looking for longer, more expensive trips and are searching for newer destinations.

Morocco, Bhutan, Greenland, Thailand and UAE are Indians’ most popular summer holiday destinations this year. Also, Croatia’s glamor and old-fashioned authenticity makes it one of the most popular European countries amongst Indians.

Skyscanner’s data suggests that Indian travelers are becoming increasingly adventurous with their travel choices.

Bhutan, a popular but remote backpacking route located at the eastern end of the Himalayas, has witnessed a staggering 244 percent increase in overall searches. Another destination that has gained attraction amongst destination searches is Morocco, witnessing a 261 percent increase in searches compared to last year over the same period.

Known for its Roman architecture, serene coastal landscape and mountains, Croatia emerged to be one of the most searched European countries with a year on year growth of 152 percent.

Far Northern European countries including Greenland and Iceland emerged as exotic summer getaway options with a 210 percent year on year growth.

Within India, travelers are looking at exploring destinations such as Srinagar, Goa, Kochi and Port Blair.
